JEFFERSON COUNTY — The body of a 25-year-old Woodlawn woman was recovered from floodwater Sunday morning after dive teams suspended their search the previous night due to unsafe conditions.

Shelby Mitchell went missing around 3:30 a.m. Saturday following reports that her vehicle left the road on Panzier Lane just south of Illinois Route 15 near Woodlawn and was believed to be submerged in water.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard says an autopsy is scheduled and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mitchell’s death is underway.

On Saturday, crews pinpointed Mitchell’s approximate location using GPS but had to suspend rescue efforts due to dangerous conditions caused by flooding.

Woodlawn firefighters were the first on the call, followed by MABAS 68 Sonar Team and the Benton Fire Dive team.

Friends and family gathered for a prayer vigil at Woodlawn High School later that night where Mitchell, a Woodlawn alumni, worked.
