MARION COUNTY — Bond has been set at $500,000 for a 26-year-old Salem man formally charged Friday in Marion County Court with multiple counts child sex assault.

Devon Q. Gibbs is back in the Marion County Jail following his arrest Thursday by Greenville police who knew Salem police wanted him for questioning. He was charged Friday in Marion County Court with nine counts Class X felony predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13.

The charges claim Gibbs committed sexual acts on multiple occasions with three girls he knew – ages 7, 8, and 10 — going back as far as last spring.

An investigation into the case began after the parents of one alleged victim notified them after their child came forward about what had happened to her. As the investigation continued, the two other girls came forward.

Gibbs was in court last week for a pretrial hearing in the 2020 home invasion case where he is accused of forcing his way in the door of a Marion County Housing Authority apartment in the 1100 block of North Trenary. Salem Police Department Detective Trent Swagler says the two cases are not connected.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on the sexual predator charges on September 21 for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with his court-appointed attorney.

If Gibbs is able to post $50,000 cash bail to gain release from jail, he’s prohibited from having contact with his alleged victims, their residences or anyone under the age of 18.
