SALEM — Darwin “Gene” Cushman, Jr., 71, of Salem, passed away Friday, June 10, 2022, at Salem Township Hospital.
He was born July 24, 1950, in Shelbyville, Illinois, the son of Darwin G. Cushman, Sr. and Dorothy Marilyn (Douglas) Cushman. He married Ramona Hugo in 1976 and later divorced.
Gene is survived by his son: Darwin “DG” Cushman III and wife Shawnda of Central City; three grandchildren: Jayden, Jaxon, and Julia Cushman all of Central City; two brothers: Brian Cushman and wife Barb of Kell and Dalan Cushman and wife Connie of Centralia; two sisters: Darlana Cushman and Andrea Cushman both of Salem; several nieces and nephews; and a special cousin: Dave Finley and wife Jane of Effingham.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Gene served in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Hollywood Candy Company, Leaf and Little Fuse. He enjoyed drinking coffee at The Pantry, fishing and working on things. He cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.
Per Gene’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shawnda Cushman and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street Centralia, Illinois 62801, 618-532-3523, who is honored to be of service to the Cushman family.
