DELAVAN, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a Tazewell County sheriff’s deputy was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to a domestic violence report.
Tazewell County Sheriff Robert Huston says 44-year-old Craig Whisenand of Tremont died in the crash. He was responding to the disturbance report at about 10:30 p.m. Monday. The sheriff says another deputy discovered the accident at about midnight. Whisenand was pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday at 12:35 a.m.
County Coroner Jeff Baldi says the squad car was found near a pine tree it apparently struck while airborne. Huston says authorities don’t know why Whisenand apparently lost control of the vehicle.
An autopsy found multiple blunt force trauma was the preliminary cause of death.
Illinois State Police and the Tazewell County coroner’s office are investigating.
