JACKSON COUNTY — Rising water in Jackson County has locals concerned evacuations could be necessary due to potential

flooding along the Mississippi River.

While no evacuation order has been issued at this time, there are concerns with this morning’s forecast crest of 49.9 on New Year’s Day. The record high in 1993 at the Chester, IL gauge was 49.7. Officials will be monitoring the forecasts closely as they may change throughout this week.

Jackson County officials are gathering additional information from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local levee commissioners. A meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the Jackson County Courthouse in Murphysboro to discuss the levee in Grand Tower, as well as all response options.
The Mayor of Grand Tower has scheduled a meeting for 7 p.m. Monday at the town hall to inform residents of his town of their next steps.
