PANA — A 22-year-old Pana man was arrested in Missouri, after his 4-month-old baby died while in a St. Louis area hospital from questionable injuries.

According to police, Robert A. Stivers was taken into custody in Missouri, where he is being held on $1 million bail pending an extradition hearing to return him to Illinois.

A press release issued from the Pana Police Department says, at approximately 3:10 a.m. Saturday, the police department received a call from Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in Missouri.

The hospital said a 4-month-old Pana infant was airlifted from the Pana Community Hospital around 10:52 pm on February 5, 2016, and had signs of bruising, healing-fractured ribs, and swelling on the brain.

The Pana Police Department, and Illinois State Police began an investigation in coordination with the Christian County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Department of Children and Family Services, and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital,

The parents of the baby were interviewed and a warrant was ultimately issued for the father’s arrest on charges of Aggravated Battery to a Child Under 13 years of age, with the Stivers ultimately being arrested.

The baby was in critical condition at the time, but Pana police learned Tuesday the baby died during the early morning hours on Monday.

An autopsy is pending with additional information and charges to follow from Christian County State’s Attorney’s Mike Havera pending autopsy results. The case remains under investigation.
