FAYETTE COUNTY — The Fayette County State’s Attorney’s Office is alerting the public to a recent scam.
The scam reportedly involves a letter from someone claiming to “hire” the recipient as a “secret shopper” and includes with the letter a certified check. According to the state’s attorney’s office, the letter and check are generally sent by certified mail.
Authorities warn, however, that this is a scam and the check is fraudulent. If you receive such a letter and check, you are warned to not cash the check or transfer the funds, as the person who cashes the check will be liable for the funds.
If you receive such a mailing, you are encouraged to report it to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office or your local law enforcement agency.
