MOUNT VERNON — A second bomb threat this week at Mt. Vernon Township High School has resulted in the building again being evacuated around 12:30 Wednesday after being evacuated Tuesday for the first bomb scare.

In an official statement Wednesday, Superintendent Dr. Mike Smith said, the district office received a message notifying them of another bomb threat had been written on a bathroom stall in one of the high school buildings. At that time, he says the district office contacted administration and local law enforcement and activated district protocol for bomb threats.

The district followed up with the evacuation of all buildings to the football field and or personnel vehicles to exit campus. Durham Transportation Services picked up students at that location away from campus buildings.

Notification to parents and the public of the early dismissal at approximately 12:25 was provided on the district website, district Facebook account, and through the School Reach notification system. This included clearing of the buildings of any remaining students and personnel and a walk through and visual inspection of all buildings by district administration and local law enforcement.

Following this action, the buildings were inspected and received final clearance by personnel of the Secretary of State Police and a bomb recognition canine unit, district administration, and local law enforcement.”

After Tuesday’s bomb threat, numerous parents of Mt. Vernon High School students said they had not been contacted about the threat or the evacuation, and at least one educator said that she was in the building at 5:35 and not only was not evacuated but was unaware of the bomb threat until after she left.

Prior to Wednesday’s bomb threat, Smith addressed the issues raised regarding Tuesday’s bomb threat response. He said administrators would be meeting Thursday to discuss the incident and the district’s response and how to possibly improve notifications and evacuations.
