JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 24-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been arrested on First Degree Murder charges in connection with the August 30, 2015, shooting death of 26-year-old Cortez Pickett.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Dewayne A. Moore was already in custody of the Jefferson County Jail at the time of his arrest and will continue to be held pending bail being set for the new charge.
The police department thanked members of the community who cooperated during the investigation, as the information provided greatly helped investigators.
According to police reports, Pickett was found unresponsive in the early morning hours of August 30, in a home in the 800 block of South 19th Street at Conger Avenue.
Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks says Picket was shot one time and was pronounced dead at the scene.
