MOUNT VERNON — An early Tuesday morning fire resulted in Veterans Memorial Drive in Mt. Vernon from 34th Street to 42nd Street being closed to all traffic for approximately 3 hours as crews battled the blaze.

The closure was expected to be in place until mid-morning, with motorists asked to take alternate routes to avoid the area. The roads were reopened just before 7 a.m.

The cause for the closure was due to a major fire at Garden Glen Apartments.

A vehicle reportedly crashed into the southwest building around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, resulting in an explosion and the building becoming fully involved. More than 30 people have been displaced as a result of the fire.

In the process of fighting the fire, one Mt. Vernon Fire Protection District firefighter was injured. He was treated at a local hospital and was released.

The driver of the vehicle has reportedly been arrested for aggravated driving under the influence. We’ll bring you more information as it becomes available.

In the process of fighting large, multi apartment fire this morning, one MVFD firefighter sustained injuries due to an explosion on scene. He was treated and released from a local hospital and is home recovering at this time.
