NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. (AP) — An official with North Chicago’s park district has been found guilty of stealing toys at a distribution event for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots charity.
Foss Park District Commissioner Susan Dixon was convicted Thursday of felony theft of government property. The Lake County News-Sun reports that she faces up to three years in prison or 30 months of probation.
Prosecutors said Dixon used her position as commissioner to take at least 28 toys during the three-day event held by the park district. Dixon’s attorney said she was taking the toys for five grandchildren who were signed up to receive toys through the event.
Dixon was one of six defendants charged in the case, but charges were dropped against three of them.
She’s scheduled to return to court May 3.
