JEFFERSON COUNTY — Sentencing has been continued for a 29-year-old Mt. Vernon man convicted of the aggravated battery of a 3-year-old toddler two years ago.

In March, a Jefferson County jury found Michael Belmont guilty of aggravated battery of a child and aggravated domestic battery. Prosecutors said Belmont beat a three-year-old boy in his care so badly that the boy had to be hospitalized.
Michael Belmont was scheduled to be sentenced Friday, but was continued to 9:30 a.m. June 3. A full day has been set aside to allow motions to be heard prior to sentencing.
Under Illinois Compiled Statutes, Belmont faces a minimum of six years to a maximum of 30 years in prison with four years of mandatory supervised release. It is a non-probational offense, and Belmont will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence.
Belmont’s wife, Kaysie Belmont, pleaded guilty in February to a reduced charge of reckless conduct for not seeking immediate medical attention for the toddler. She was sentenced to 30 months’ probation.
