SALEM — Area firefighters were called out to a second fire Monday, this time to a two-story home in Salem that sustained heavy smoke and heat damage.
Salem firefighters responded to the home at 825 North Broadway, calling for mutual aide from Centralia City, Kinmundy-Alma, Odin, and Sandoval for both manpower and equipment.
Salem firefighters were on scene at the fire in Dix when the call came in about the residential fire in Salem.
When firefighters arrived at the Broadway home flames were showing at the back of the home. It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical problem in the kitchen.
Part of a back wall had to be torn down to allow firefighters better access to the flames and an aerial truck from Centralia City was used to attack the fire from the roof. They remained on scene for approximately three hours.
No one was at home when the fire erupted, and no injuries were reported, but two cats inside died from the smoke.
