JACKSON COUNTY — A 43-year-old Murphysboro man has been charged with first degree murder in connection with the death of his cellmate at the Jackson County Jail.

Richard D. Powell is accused of causing the death of 31-year-old Collin B. Kotlarz who was being held at the jail on felony DUI charges. Kotlarz, of Tennessee, was discovered dead during a routine cell check early Thursday morning.

Illinois State Police say Kotlarz and Powell were cellmates and got into a fight.

Powell was originally being held for misdemeanor domestic battery. His bail is now set at $1 million.

Illinois State Police continue to investigate.
