JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 26-year-old Mt. Vernon man was due in Jefferson County Court Tuesday for a status hearing on a pre-sentence investigation stemming from his conviction for a child sex crime.
Cody Richardson pleaded guilty in April to sexually abusing a girl under the age of 13. Richardson entered an open plea of guilt to a reduced charge of Class 2 felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
He was originally charged in January with two counts Class X felony predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
One of the Class X counts was reduced and the other count was dismissed per the plea agreement. Evidence presented in court showed Richardson committed an act of sexual conduct with the underage victim between February 2015 and January 2016.
The victim was under 13 years of age at the time and Richardson was more than 17 years of age, Richardson will have to register as a sex offender as part of his conviction.
The pre-sentence investigation will help the court determine Richardson’s sentence. A Class 2 felony conviction is punishable by between 3 and 7 years in prison, or even up to 4 years probation. However, the sex offender evaluation portion of the investigation was not yet complete. The hearing was rescheduled for June 6, when the report is expected to be completed.
Richardson remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail where he has been held since his January arrest.
