WAYNE COUNTY — A 36-year-old Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy was arrested Monday night for alleged domestic battery.

Illinois State Police arrested Larry Lee Rankin, of rural Fairfield, around 9:30 Monday night at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department.

Rankin was charged Tuesday with misdemeanor domestic battery for an alleged altercation with his wife Monday night. According to the sheriff’s department, Rankin has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case. He was not on duty at the time of the alleged incident.

Authorities seized all firearms from Rankin’s home, per Illinois’ domestic violence laws. The incident was initially reported to a friend of Rankin’s wife, who then contacted the Illinois State Police.
