SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois health officials want to fight the heroin epidemic without just handing out overdose medication.

Medical leaders met yesterday in Springfield for a Heroin Crisis Summit to brainstorm new solutions.

They say Narcan is not a solution to the opioid crisis, and shouldn’t be carried around like epi-pens are too help with allergy reactions.

One hospital CEO said doctors should start limiting their opioid prescriptions to patients.
