CENTRALIA — One person shot Sunday at a Centralia park was reportedly an innocent bystander running from the gunfire.
According to Centralia Police Chief Doug Krutsinger,19-year-old DeVale Johnson, of Georgia, and 52-year-old Juan Hayes, of Centralia, were shot around 9:15 p.m. Sunday at Laura Leake Park in Centralia, with the suspected shooter fleeing the scene on foot.
Police quickly arrived on scene and reported a large crowd of between 80 and 100 people, including families with children, remained in the park.
Krutsinger said both victims were taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia, with non-life threatening injuries and were later airlifted to St. Louis area hospitals for treatment.
Krutsinger says Johnson appears to have been the target of the shooting, with Hayes apparently an innocent bystander running for the safety of his white Ford Explorer, which remained at the scene late Sunday night.
Law enforcement sealed off the area, but as of 11:30 p.m. had not yet apprehended the suspect, who had reportedly been chasing Johnson. Krutsinger noted no bullet casings had been found at the scene.
The hospital was placed on lockdown as a safety precaution, when a large crowd gathered outside the emergency room. Krutsinger said the crowd at the hospital had largely dissipated by 11:30 p.m., but officers remained at the park where ISP Crime Scene was expected to arrive.
Krutsinger said there was no truth to rumors that an officer was involved in the shooting.
Law enforcement from Centralia Police Department, Central City, Wamac, Marion County, Clinton County, and Carlyle Police Department, along with ISP responded to the scene of the shooting.
