MOUNT VERNON — An 18-year-old Mt. Vernon man was arrested Tuesday on multiple weapons related charges, after police responded to a report of an armed subject.

Lekedrieon Russell arrested early Tuesday morning at 19th and Lamar streets, after officers responded to a report of a subject armed with a handgun in the area of 18th and Lamar.

Mt. Vernon Police Chief Chris Deichman says upon making contact with Russell, officers found he was in the possession of a loaded 9 mm handgun and cannabis.

He was taken into custody and transported to the Jefferson County Jail on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, no FOID card and possession of cannabis. Formal charges and bail remain to be set.

Police responded to the same area over the weekend to reports of shots fired.

One man was reportedly struck as the vehicle he was riding in passed by a house party near 15th and Lamar. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
