GRANITE CITY — Alligator gars are being re-introduced into Illinois’ waters.  The alligator gar was declared extinct in Illinois in the 1990s. 

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources was recently given thousands of young alligator gars from other states. 

Yesterday, hundreds of alligator gars were introduced into the waters at Horseshoe Lake State Recreation Area in Granite City.
