LOCKPORT, Ill. (AP) — Officials say the reopening of the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery is largely thanks to local support.

The Lockport gallery was one of five state museum locations that were casualties of the state budget crisis. On Saturday, it became the third to reopen, thanks to a $50,000 contribution split between the city of Lockport and a nonprofit created to support the museum.

Lockport Gallery director John Lustig told The (Joliet) Herald-News (http://bit.ly/2cYav7M) the contribution from the community was crucial to the site re-emerging.

The gallery allows visitors to view exhibits brought from the Illinois State Museum in Springfield. It gives them the opportunity to see pieces from a collection that includes 13.5 million objects collected since the museum opened in 1877. Most of the items on display Saturday were artwork.
