FAYETTE COUNTY — Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen is reporting a 50-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed Sunday morning on U.S. Route 40 just west of St. Elmo.

According to Bowen, Gregory Stoner, of St. Elmo, was struck by a westbound vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:56 a.m. Sunday.

Bowen says the incident happened shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, and remains under investigation by his office and the Illinois State Police.

According to ISP, Stoner crashed his car in a private driveway and was walking away from the crash when he was struck in the westbound driving lane by a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Ashley N. Lakin, of Brownstown.

ISP says Lakin attempted to avoid striking Stoner and swerved into the ditch on the southside of the roadway where her car overturned and came to rest on its top. She reportedly suffered minor injuries in the crash.
