FAYETTE COUNTY — A 50-year-old Vandalia man who was the subject of a forfeiture story we ran last week has been arrested on new charges.
Hardie Todd Shafer was arrested by Vandalia police over the weekend. He has been formally charged this morning in Fayette County Court with Class 3 felony possession of less than 5-grams of methamphetamine, Class 3 felony violation of bail bond on a Class 2 felony offense, and misdemeanor violation of bail bond on a Class 4 felony offense.
Shafer was arrested in July by Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies and charged with Class 2 felony delivery of less than 5 grams of methamphetamine, Class 3 felony possession of meth, three counts Class 3 felony possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Last week a forfeiture case was filed in Fayette County Court, seeking to confiscate a 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck and nearly $6,000 seized from Shafer in that July arrest.
A recent study shows that Illinois law enforcement confiscated more than $319 million in cash and property from individuals over the past 10 years, using a system that doesn’t require convictions to validate the forfeitures.
