While the number appears to come from an Illinois company, the association says that is not the case.
Charities often solicit donors under multiple names. This one is listed as one of the “Top 50 Worst Charities.” CharityWatch is aware of this group soliciting donors also using the names American Police & Sheriff’s Association, DPSF, and Police Officers Safety Association.
The group is not registered with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office according to the Charitable Database maintained by General Madigan’s Office. They also are not associated with any Illinois Sheriff or legitimate police organization in Illinois.
Telemarketing fraud costs billions of dollars each year. Beware of solicitors who want you to “act immediately” or are offering a “too good to be true” opportunity; they are most likely fraudulent.
Remember, if you have any doubts, are feeling pressured, or are asked for personal and financial information you have the right to simply hang up.
