EAST ST. LOUIS — A fugitive who hid from authorities in Monroe County was sentenced to federal prison last week.

United State Attorney Donald Boyce reported that 51-year-old Todd Sweet was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison and three years’ supervised release after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

At the time of the commission of these crimes, Sweet was living in a tent in heavy woods in Monroe County after having escaped from his supervised release in Missouri on charges of possession of body armor by a violent felon.

The landowner called the Monroe County Sheriff to report someone trespassing on his property.  Police found a GPS unit in Sweet’s possession, and that unit led authorities to a tent where the firearm was discovered, as well as a stolen truck from Missouri.
