The annual Illinois Peace Officers Memorial Service to honor law enforcement officers killed in Illinois in the line of duty placed fallen Marion County Correctional Officer Adam Conrad name on the memorial Thursday. Conrad was killed in a traffic incident on January 20, 2016, while on duty for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to Conrad, 11 other fallen officers were added to the memorial this year, including Jo Daviess County Sheriff John Bardell who was killed in 1916.
The Memorial Ceremony is always held on the first Thursday in May. The statue, which was dedicated on October 29th, 1990, sits on the West Lawn of the State Capital. The Memorial is self-supported and has never been paid for by taxpayer funds.
