CENTRALIA — The Marion County Coroner’s Office has identified a 72-year-old Centralia woman who died in a fire at her home Friday morning.

Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon reports that Sharen Cox died of smoke inhalation when a fire broke out inside her home at 616 North Hickory during the early morning hours.

Centralia City firefighters attempted to gain entry into the home when they arrived at the scene around 5:40 a.m. but were pushed back by the flames.

Cannon says he was summoned to the scene when it was determined by Centralia City Fire Department that there was a victim inside the residence. Cannon says Mrs. Cox was pronounced deceased at 6:56 a.m. Friday morning.

According to Cannon, no autopsy is planned, as the cause of death is clearly attributable to smoke inhalation from the fire. The Coroner’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Centralia Fire Department, Centralia Police Department, and Lifestar EMS.

All available city firefighters were called out to fight the blaze and Fire Protection District firefighters provided mutual aid at the scene, while Sandoval firefighters covered the downtown station in case of another fire call.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire. That investigation continues.

Rogers/Atkins Funeral Home in Salem is assisting the family with arrangements.
