PALATINE, Ill. (AP) — A Chicago-area transgender student has appealed a judge’s ruling denying her request for an injunction that would have granted her unrestricted access to the girls’ locker room at her high school.

Lawyers for Palatine High School student Nova Maday filed the appeal Wednesday in Illinois’ 1st District Appellate Court.

The 18-year-old is seeking full access equal to all female students in a November lawsuit against Township High School District 211 under Illinois’ Human Rights Act. She is currently restricted to a private area within the locker room.

The Cook County judge presiding over her civil case, Thomas Allen, ruled in January that state law only requires Maday be given access — not “full and equal” access to the locker room.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois is representing Maday.
