BENTON, Ill. — The former Southern Illinois city treasurer has agreed to plead guilty Thursday in federal court in Benton to stealing more than $150,000 from the city for which he used to work.
Ryan Thorpe, the former Zeigler treasurer was charged with three counts wire fraud, and two counts embezzlement. Details of the plea agreement have not yet been released but he faced up to 80 years in prison and more than $1 million in fines.
The FBI raided Thorpe’s home and office in August 2017, and multiple auditor’s reports found he had written hundreds of city checks to himself since 2013.
Prosecutors say he covered up the thefts by altering copies of checks in city records to show approved vendors names.
