FAYETTE COUNTY — A 23-year-old Shobonier man was killed and a Vandalia woman injured in an ATV crash early Saturday morning in Fayette County.

According to Illinois State Police, around 12:05 a.m. Saturday, 23-year-old Billy Joe Tate Jr., was killed after his four-wheeler left the roadway at Fayette County Road 1150 North, at County Road 1225 North—southwest of Vandalia.

The four-wheeler reportedly overturned and pinned Tate and his 19-year-old passenger Macye T. Sarchet of Vandalia to a tree.

ISP reports say witnesses on scene pulled the four-wheeler off the victims. Tate reportedly was not breathing and was unresponsive.

Witnesses then called 911 and began CPR. Tate was transported by ambulance to Fayette County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sarchet was transported to Fayette County Hospital and then was airlifted to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
