BENTON, Ill. — A suspect in a Thursday morning bank robbery in Benton has been taken in to custody.

According to the Benton Police Department, at approximately 9:11 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery that had occurred at State Bank of Whittington located at 200 North Main Street.
The suspect was described as a white male, approximayely 70 years old, with white “goatee” style facial hair, wearing glasses, a black and white ball cap, black jacket, and blue jeans.
The suspect displayed a handgun in his waistband and demanded money from the bank teller.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken. No injuries were reported.
The suspect fled the scene in a silver Chevrolet Cruze.
The Benton, West City, West Frankfort Police, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and FBI continue to investigate.
