UPDATE:

Officials say a man who drove onto a naval station north of Chicago without showing credentials, leading to the base being locked down, turned out to be an employee who didn’t follow directions. John Sheppard, a spokesman for Naval Station Great Lakes, said in a news release that the man was caught a short time after entering the base shortly after 7 a.m. Friday. The base issued an initial warning on its Facebook page for personnel to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT!” but it later described it as a “minor situation” and lifted the total lockdown. Sheppard says the worker didn’t follow the gate sentry’s directions.

GREAT LAKES, Ill. (AP) — A Naval Station Great Lakes spoksman says the base in northeast Illinois is on lockdown after a vehicle passed through entry without the driver showing credentials.

Public Affairs spokesman John Sheppard says the vehicle went in at 7:09 a.m. Friday. He says the base will remain on lockdown until the vehicle is located. He says he could not provide further information.

A Facebook posting for the base says “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT! ALL PERSONNEL, LOCKDOWN. TAKE COVER IN NEAREST BUILDING OR STRUCTURE. AWAIT INSTRUCTION. ALL GATES ARE CLOSED.”

Sgt. Christopher Covelli with the Lake County Sheriff’s office said a car crashed in front of a gate at the facility and authorities were searching for a person inside the base.

A public information officer for the base, however, said a driver went through an area where credentials are required but did not show credentials to the guard and continued into the naval base.

A post from the base just before 9 a.m. Friday said the facility remained on lockdown as authorities “reacted to a minor situation involving an unauthorized entry.”

“No one was harmed and no property was damaged,” the post read.
