CHICAGO (AP) — A former suburban Chicago mayor and county official has pleaded guilty in federal court to an extortion scheme.

Former McCook Mayor Jeffrey Tobolski is accused of conspiring with a police office to shake down a restaurant owner who needed city permission to serve alcohol.

Tobolski also pleaded guilty Tuesday to filing a false tax return in 2018. In court, prosecutors said that he is cooperating with the investigation and could get a reduced sentence with full cooperation.

Tobolski resigned from his mayoral post and as Cook County in March, months after federal agents raided his office.
