MT. VERNON — Sometime Tuesday afternoon an inmate of the Jefferson County Justice Center attempted to escape custody of law enforcement at the Jefferson County Courthouse and was shot.
Sister station WMIX in Mt. Vernon has received unconfirmed reports that the inmate was 55-year-old Fredrick Goss of Mt. Vernon who is accused of Armed Robbery and Shooting at a Mt. Vernon police officer back in June.

His trial was scheduled for jury selection Tuesday. Again, these are unconfirmed reports from citizens who were in the courthouse at the time of the shooting and on the street in the aftermath. These reports are not from law enforcement officials that were on scene.
The escapee was shot by law enforcement and taken to a local hospital for treatment. There has been no word on the subject’s status at this point.
Goss was arrested in June for the alleged armed robbery of the Mt Vernon Huck’s Store at 1801 South 10th Street, which resulted in the exchange of gunfire with Mt Vernon Police. Goss was struck in that exchange and was hospitalized for multiple weeks before being brought to the Jefferson County Jail to face the two Class X felony charges.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Mt. Vernon Police Department, and Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate Tuesday’s incident. We will bring you further, official, details from them as they are made available to us.
