MARION COUNTY — The Marion County Jail has released information regarding the death of a 24-year-old female inmate earlier this month.

According to the jail, Romy McAlexander, of Centralia was found unconscious in her jail cell July 10. Corrections staff report they were alerted to the incident and began monitoring McAlexader but her condition worsened and deputies performed life-saving measures before calling an ambulance.

Romy was taken to the Salem Township Hospital but was transferred to SSM Health in Mt. Vernon where she died.

An autopsy was conducted on McAlexander on July 13 and a preliminary cause of death was determined to be a previously undiagnosed medical issue involving her lungs.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Jefferson County Coroner’s Office say their investigation is ongoing.
