FAYETTE COUNTY — Bail has been set at $500,000 for a 31-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, charged in Fayette County Court Monday with drug trafficking and possession after approximately 20 pounds of cannabis was allegedly found during a weekend traffic stop.

According to Fayette County State’s Attorney Josh Morrison, an Illinois State Police trooper stopped a James Polanco for allegedly speeding Saturday on Interstate 70 in Fayette County.

The stop reportedly resulted in the discovery of approximately 20 pounds of cannabis in duffle bags inside the Polanco vehicle.

Polanco was taken into custody and transported to the Fayette County Jail where he is charged with Class X felony trafficking of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis and Class 1 felony possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis.

Polanco’s ultimate destination is unknown at this time. He indicated in court Monday that he will hire a private attorney. He is next scheduled in court on March 29 for a preliminary hearing in the case.
