CENTRALIA — Emergency responders from Centralia Fire Protection District, Lifestar, Air-Evac and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle vs. train crash around 5:15 p.m. Thursday on Shattuc Road at Hugo Road just north of the rail crossing.
According to CFPD, one occupant was airlifted from the scene to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the crash.
The woman was found lying next to the vehicle, and bystanders reported she was ejected from the vehicle in the crash. Her condition, extent of injuries, and identity are not available at this time.
CFPD says she was traveling northbound on Shattuc Road when her car was struck by an eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train.
The train pushed her car off the east side of the crossing. Flashing rail crossing signals were reportedly working at the time of the crash.
Clinton County Emergency Management was on scene to direct traffic as emergency personnel responded to the crash and the cleanup. The road was closed for a few hours but was reopened before 8:30 p.m. Firefighters returned to quarters around 7:43 p.m.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office expects to have more information to release Friday.
