CHRISTIAN COUNTY — A 51-year-old Macon County Sheriff’s deputy has been formally charged in Christian County Court with attempted murder in connection with a nine hour standoff over the weekend with law enforcement responding to reports the deputy shot at his wife as she fled their home just south of Pana.
According to the Illinois State Police, Markes N. Rodgers barricaded himself inside his home before he finally surrendered at 1:11 a.m. Sunday and was taken into custody “without further incident.
Christian County Sheriff’s deputies had been called to Rodgers’ house at 4:15 p.m. Saturday for a domestic disturbance. According to reports, Rodgers’ wife had fled the home on foot and Rodgers “had fired multiple shots at her as she was running away from the home.”
Deputies located her at a neighbor’s home and took her to safety and then evacuated homes on either side of the Rodgers’ property as they set up a perimeter.
Illinois State Police SWAT team and state police negotiators were called to the scene to oversee contact with Rodgers.
Rodgers remains in the Christian County Jail with bail set at $500,000. He is prohibited from having direct or indirect contact with his wife, including through the use of third parties.
He’s next scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a first appearance with his court appointed attorney.
