Glenn R. Ramey faces charges of first-degree murder and predatory criminal sexual assault. He is accused in the Nov. 23, 2016 slaying of Sabrina Stauffenberg.
The jury was given four options when handed the case Thursday, they could find Ramey fit to stand trial; find him unfit but able to attain fitness following treatment for a year in a mental institution; find him unfit and unable to attain fitness with treatment; or unfit but they could not determine if he could attain fitness with treatment.
On Wednesday the court ruled that a recorded call Ramey placed from the Richland County Jail was admissible and would not be excluded from evidence as was his interviews with the Illinois State Police following his arrest.
A judge had earlier ruled that both Ramey’s jury trial in the slaying and his fitness trial would be moved out of Richland County to Effingham County.
The Effingham County jury handed down its finding shortly after being handed the case after lunch Thursday.
The case will now proceed toward a criminal trial to where Ramey will be tried on the charges against him.
According to investigators, Stauffenberg was waiting on the front porch of her home for a ride to church when family members reported her missing. The victim’s body was found several hours later near a business in Olney. The murder charge alleges Ramey suffocated the victim.
Ramey remains in the Richland County jail under $10 million bond. A trial date for the slaying and sexual assault has not been set.
