MOUNT VERNON — A Mt. Vernon nursing home was evacuated late Thursday morning after an improper mixing of cleaning chemicals resulted in the creation of chlorine gas in the building.
According to Mt. Vernon Fire, 42 residents along with staff of White Oaks Nursing Home were evacuated and transported to the conference room of Crossroads Hospital in Mt. Vernon while the Hazardous Materials team cleaned up the toxic mixture from the facility. Fire officials then monitored the air quality after the cleanup before allowing residents and staff to return to the facility.
Litton Ambulance, South Central Transit, and other facilities all assisted in the evacuation.
