WHITE COUNTY — A 24-year-old McLeansboro man sentenced earlier this week to almost 32 years in prison for the September 2016 murder of James Berkel, formerly of Salem, pleaded guilty Wednesday in White County to charges stemming from a June escape from the White County Jail.

Zachery Shock pleaded guilty to a Class 2 felony count of escape, a Class 3 felony count of criminal damage to government property and one Class 3 felony count of aggravated battery.

He was sentenced to a total of 17 years, with seven years on the escape charge, five years on the criminal damage to government property charge and five years for aggravated battery – a charge that was added Tuesday stemming from an April incident where Shock punched another inmate while in jail. These sentences will run consecutively with the sentence Shock received Tuesday in Hamilton County.

Shock and two other inmates escaped from the White County Jail in June by using a pipe to break through the concrete and brick wall.

Shock was in jail at the time for Berkel’s murder and was on the run for three weeks in Gallatin County.

He was eventually captured while walking with a loaded handgun. He was arrested without incident.
