CHICAGO (AP) — Several community organizations have announced a plan to get guns off the streets of Chicago and reduce gun violence by 20% this year. Arne Duncan, who is a managing partner at Create Real Economic Destiny, said at a news conference Tuesday that a 20% reduction would get the homicide count below 400, but that number was still too high.
Duncan was U.S. Education Secretary under former President Barack Obama. Duncan’s organization is joined in the effort by the Heartland Alliance, Metropolitan Family Services, and Communities Partnering 4 Peace. Their main strategy is to partner with community groups to get guns off the street.
