WAYNE COUNTY — A Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy was reportedly shot and killed early Wednesday morning on Interstate 64.
Reports indicate that shortly before 5 a.m., Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley responded to a call for a motorist assist at the 115 mile marker on I-64. Soon after the deputy called in license information on the vehicle, he was shot and the suspect drove off with the deputy’s patrol vehicle. The patrol vehicle was later located, leaving authorities to believe the suspect (or suspects) had fled on foot.

While it’s possible the suspect fled to St. Peter, Mo., just outside St. Louis, a massive manhunt continues in Wayne County with a large section of the interstate shut down. In the area of the incident, heavily armed police are searching for the suspect – some on 4-wheelers.
The St. Peter Police Department issued a statement late Wednesday morning stating there was an – “Active scene/investigation” at a Quik Trip where a male subject carjacked a victim and shot the victim in the process before fleeing the area.
The statement says the victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. it’s believed this is a continuation of events which occurred in Illinois this morning” referring to the fatal shooting of the Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy.
The deputy was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:07 a.m.
