MARION COUNTY — A 35-year-old Walnut Hill man granted furlough Tuesday in Marion County Court to seek mental health treatment was returned to the Marion County Jail Thursday, according to online jail logs.
According to family of Carl Horn, he was not receiving mental health treatment, but was instead in a hospital on a ventilator forinjuries he received while on suicide watch in the Marion County Jail. He was ultimately discharged from the hospital Thursday and returned to the jail.

While his injuries were being photographed at the hospital by a sheriff’s deputy preparing to return him to the jail, Horn allegedly apologized and said his injuries were self-inflicted.
An investigation continues into claims by Horn’s family that the injuries he suffered were not self-inflicted. Video surveillance of Horn’s jail cell are reportedly being reviewed. Since he was on suicide watch, Horn’s cell was under 24-hour surveillance.
Photos submitted by the family show Horn in a hospital bed and on a ventilator. He has two black eyes in the photos, a neck brace and cuts and contusions on his arms, head and hands — injuries not seen in his mugshot taken upon his initial arrest.
Online court records say Horn was released Tuesday on furlough to seek mental health treatment under the condition that he return to the jail on Tuesday, January 12, when he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the charges that landed him in jail last month.
According to the county, Horn was transported Monday morning, January 4, to Salem Township Hospital due to concerns for his mental health and that he was then released Tuesday, January 5, to an Indiana mental health facility that had a bed available and would allow an armed guard to be present.
Two weeks before he was transported to the Indiana hospital, Horn was arrested when he allegedly lunged for a sheriff’s deputy’s sidearm.
Horn’s mother had called 911 on December 21, to report he was threatening suicide. Deputy Hannah Burr responded to the call, and while in the kitchen of the mother’s home, Horn reportedly said he was going to take Burr’s gun and then lunged for the weapon.
The two allegedly wrestled for the weapon, and two strikes from Burr’s Tazer reportedly had no affect on Horn.
The struggle between Burr and Horn reportedly continued until Sgt. Deputy David Hitibidal arrived on scene and helped Burr take Horn to the ground and get him in handcuffs.
Horn was then taken to the Marion County Jail, where he reportedly remained in solitary confinement under suicide watch until Monday when he was taken to the hospital in Salem.
The claims of Horn’s family and what led to his condition at the Indiana hospital are reportedly under investigation.
