FAYETTE COUNTY — A 24-year old Burbank, Illinois man is facing charges of unlawful transportation of cigarettes, after he was arrested last week by Illinois State Police during a traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Fayette County.
Mohamad Ibrahim was arrested on Interstate 70 at mile marker 76. Ibrahim is charged with two Class 3 felonies, one for Unlawful Transportation of fewer than 40,000 unstamped cigarettes to evade Illinois tax. .
Police report that Ibrahim did not have a permit from the Illinois Department of Revenue for the transportation of cigarettes without Illinois tax stamps.
The second charge against Ibrahim is for possession of fewer than 1,000 packs of contraband cigarettes in their original packaging.
The case is being handled by the Illinois Attorney General’s office as the offense is a violation of the Illinois Department of Revenue’s Cigarette Use Tax Act. Ibrahim will appear in Fayette County Court for a preliminary hearing on May 20 at 1pm.
Following his arrest, Ibrahim was taken to the Fayette County Jail with bail set at $100,000. He ultimately posted $10,000 cash bond and was released.
