POPE COUNTY — Illinois State Police are reporting Dracy “Clint” Pendleton has been shot and killed in a gunfight with FBI agent and other law enforcement, bringing to an end a nearly week-long search for him in Southern Illinois.

ISP reported earlier in today that the FBI agent had been shot while helping in the search for Pendleton in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois.

Law enforcement reportedly spotted Pendleton just after midnight Sunday morning running south into woods near Sulphur Springs, carrying what appeared to be rifle.

They tracked Pendleton to a vacant nearby house, where authorities were able to set up a perimeter at around 5 a.m. At some point during the standoff, Pendleton opened fire, striking and injuring the FBI agent.

Authorities sent a robot into the home, where Pendleton’s body was found. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pendleton was accused of shooting a Mahomet police officer last weekend. The FBI agent was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is expected to survive.

The search for Pendleton moved to Southern Illinois, and intensified when a truck he was believed to have stolen in Champaign County was discovered in the Luck Creek Wilderness Area of the Shawnee National Forest in Pope County.

Authorities had closed the wilderness area to the public on Monday.
