Illinois residents applying for driver’s licenses and state identification cards will leave Driver Services facilities with temporary paperwork instead of permanent cards by the end of July, the Secretary of State’s office announced Tuesday.
SPRINGFIELD — The process in which the forms of identification are issued is changing as Illinois takes steps to comply with the federal Real ID Act.
The temporary paperwork, which will include a photo, will be valid for 45 days and will work in place of the permanent IDs. Also, the old license or ID card will be returned to renewal applicants with a hole punched it.
Permanent licenses and ID cards will be mailed within 15 business days following fraud checks to insure the applicant’s identity. Illinoisans can update their addresses online at cyberdriveillinois.com.
Licenses and ID cards are also getting anti-counterfeiting security updates.
“These changes are necessary for Illinois to be Real ID compliant,” Secretary of State Jesse White said in a statement. “In addition, the changes further enhance our efforts to protect Illinoisans from fraud and identity theft.”
While the driver’s license and ID card upgrades are being implemented, there will be more than one valid license/ID card until the old design format is phased out. Fees remained unchanged.
The transition to central issuance of permanent licenses and IDs will take effect in phases.
Safe Driver Renewal program applicants will receive their new licenses — with the upgraded security features — via mail.
