HAMILTON COUNTY — One man was killed and two others injured after a 38-year-old Fairfield man tried to drive through a construction site and struck a piece of machinery, after hitting a worker.
The incident happened around 3:35 p.m. Friday in a construction zone on Route 242 just south of Hamilton County Road 2150N shen Neil D. Hendrick was driving his 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck northbound on Route 242.
When Hendrick came across a construction crew repaving part of that road, he drove around the stopped vehicles and into the southbound lane.
In an attempt to avoid southbound traffic, he then drove back into the northbound lane and struck 25-year-old construction worker Brandon D. Biggerstaff, of McLeansboro, before crashing into a Case IH backhoe operated by 28-year-old Aaron Kyle Musgrave, of Fairfield.
Hendrick was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his truck upon impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.
