JEFFERSON COUNTY — A car vs. train collision around 3:15 Tuesday afternoon in Waltonville resulted in a 60-year-old Woodlawn man being airlifted in critical condition from the scene of the crash.
Gary Kabat was traveling westbound on Stagecoach Road when a southbound train traveling more than 35 miles per hour struck the side of his vehicle.
Waltonville Fire Protection District and Mt. Vernon City Fire arrived within minutes of the crash at the rail crossing at Stagecoach Road in Waltonville.
Emergency responders had to extricate Kabat from the vehicle that was totaled in the collision. EMTs stabilized Kabat for air transport when the medical helicopter arrived on scene around 4 p.m. He was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for major injuries. We have no further information about Kabat’s condition at this time.
Stagecoach Road just east of Hall Lane in Waltonville is closed while first responders worked the scene of the crash.
