JEFFERSON COUNTY — A high-speed chase through multiple counties Friday night ended the arrest of a 42-year-old Carmi man in Jefferson County.

Police say Gary Perkins led police on a chase that started in Royalton around 8 p.m. Perkins fled onto Route 51 through Carbondale, driving into oncoming traffic several times.

The pursuit wound its way through several communities in Jackson and Franklin counties with speeds topping 115 mph.

The chase ended around 9 p.m. in Jefferson County when an Ina police officer deployed spike strips just south of Mt. Vernon, causing the suspect vehicle to run off the roadway shortly after.

No injuries were reported, and Perkins was taken into custody for alleged aggravated fleeing and eluding and reckless driving.

Police say they are also investigating Perkins for drug and weapons activity.
